Glucomannan: How Weight Loss Works

What is Glucomannan?

Glucomannan is a soluable dietary fibre and the principle active ingredient derived from the root of the Konjac plant. For 1500 years, this plant has been hailed for its medicinal and culinary applications. Native to the warmer climbs of East Asia, Konjac, is a popular starchy vegetable similar to a yam.

Yet the rarity of this plant in UK markets, alongside the ubiquity of the humble potato – very much the starch du jour – in Europe, means that it is hard to see the Konjac ever breaking through to the mainstream.

As such you are more likely to see Glucomannan, the extract of the konjac root, on british shelves than the plant itself. The great thing about glucomannan is that it is among the most natural dietary supplements on the market. Konjac root is essentially 97% water and 3% natural fibre. Of which pretty much all of this is glucomannan and as such requires little chemical processing or alteration.

How does Glucomannan work?

Like all good vegetables, Konjac is absolutely packed with pure natural fibre. What makes konjac special however, is that this particular fibre, glucomannan, is highly water soluble. As such, when mixed with water, it forms a gel-like substance and swells in size. When ingested, glucomannan expands in the digestive system and this has the natural effect making you feel fuller while having eaten less.

This special quality of konjac has been recognised in Japanese culture for a centuries. A  traditional Japanese side-dish, konnyaku is a kind of gelatinous, starchy cake. The glucomannan based gel is often mixed with seaweed and eaten as a snack or used as a simple way to make a small dish much more filling.

Colloquially known as “broom of the stomach” konnyaku is almost totally indigestible and as such passes through your system untouched and sweeps up any unwanted toxins along the way.

We’re speaking from experience when we say that konnyaku is about as appetising as it sounds. Truthfully, konnyaku is used more for its unique texture than its also unique flavour.

Yet, jokes aside, this age-old solution has some serious, time-tested, weight control properties. Given that it is now available in an easy-to-take capsule, this all-natural digestive aid is sure to become one of the biggest health food trends for 2018 as a safe and natural aid to weight loss!

What do we know about weight loss supplements?

As always – it’s important to remember that diet control requires careful planning. It is imperative that you take good care of your nutrition and exercise regularly to achieve the best effects. The main benefits of glucomannan are:

  • It promotes fullness. Glucomannan is capable of binding up to 50 times the amount of water in relation to its own weight.
  • It slows down the absorption of other nutrients such as fats and proteins, preventing a rapid increase of blood sugar levels after carb heavy meals..
  • It promotes healthy bacteria. As a soluble fibre, it is broken down as a source of energy by healthy bacteria in the intestine.  This has the added benefit of producing butyrate and research has shown that this can prevent fat gain, improve sensitivity to insulin and help normalise cholesterol levels.
