Glucomannan: How Weight Loss Works

What is Glucomannan?

Glucomannan is a soluable dietary fibre and the principle active ingredient derived from the root of the Konjac plant. For 1500 years, this plant has been hailed for its medicinal and culinary applications. Native to the warmer climbs of East Asia, Konjac, is a popular starchy vegetable similar to a yam.

The great thing about glucomannan is that it is among the most natural dietary supplements on the market. Konjac root is essentially 97% water and 3% natural fibre. Of which pretty much all of this is glucomannan and as such requires little chemical processing or alteration.

How does Glucomannan work?

Like all good vegetables, Konjac is absolutely packed with pure natural fibre. What makes konjac special however, is that this particular fibre, glucomannan, is highly water soluable. As such, when mixed with water it forms a gel-like substance and swells in size. When ingested, glucomannan expands in the digestive system and this has the natural effect making you feel more full while having eaten less.

This special quality of konjac has been recognised in Japanese culture for a centuries. A  traditional Japanese side-dish, konnyaku is a kind of gelatinous, starchy cake. The glucomannan based gel is often mixed with seaweed and eaten as a snack or used as a simple way to make a small dish much more filling.

Colloquially known as “broom of the stomach” konnyaku is almost totally indigestible and as such passes through your system untouched and sweeps up any unwanted toxins along the way.
